California Dreamin' Part VII -- Up the Mountain

This was my attempt to capture the rugged landscape of California's high desert. After picking up Ken's brother we drove up, up, up a very narrow road. The granite rocks are enormous, some as big as a large car. On the rock strewn mountainsides grow scrub oak and little else. I am amazed that anything grows.

Down at the bottom of this steep canyon flows the Kern River.

And at the summit of the road, Lake Isabella. What a contrast to the lakes in Wisconsin which are always surrounded by greenery (when they aren't frozen over). The blue sky and water were beautiful in their own stark way, as were the distant purple mountain peaks.
