Sexual Crimes as a Weapon of War in the Congo

This article has me stunned, teary-eyed and feeling sick. It is graphic and very disturbing--and something we should know about. Some things are disturbing. A four year old? An eleven month old? Rape with weapons and bullets? Hundreds of women waiting for surgery to repair fistulas?

I am overwhelmed. And I want to do something, not just feel bad about this horror.

But what?

Dear Singing Owl,
This situation is terrible and everyone who knows about it should feel for the victims.
We as christians can take up this matter in prayer - that is a start.
Thank you for bringing this up on your blog and giving those who are suffering another opportunity to be heard.

That was very difficult to read, seems so unreal that any human being would even consider doing these things. It is pure evil in the most defiling form possible. It makes me mad I mean very angry and it should. I hate the thought that a person can actually do something like this to another human being and go on with life as if it was fine. Who thinks like that?

LJ, yes, I've been praying since I read it. But I want to take action...somehow. M2P, I cannot fathom a person who can do such things even being a human any longer. It is beyond my comprehension--and the suffering of these women and children is as well.

Medecins Sans Frontieres are doing a great deal of work in this area in DR Congo. I have only got the UK site which is www.msf.uk.org though obviously you can get the info from there, but there will be US sites for MSF I am sure. They are one of the charities I support regularly as I think they do an enormous amount of valuable work across the world. They are an international organisation, though started in France, hence the title!

Their latest "Dispatches" highlighted this very problem.

Thank you, Gilly. I'll check it out and see what I can find out about organizations this side of the pond.

Dear Owl, there may be other medical charitable agencies that focus on doing fistula repair...I'll try to find the info for you.

Honestly, I can't go to the link yet. Sometimes it feels like too much. Maybe tomorrow I will feel strong enough.
